What is Kennel Cough?

Kennel Cough is a highly contagious respiratory disease found in dogs. Dogs commonly contract kennel cough at places where large amounts of other dogs come into contact with each other, such as large-scale boarding and daycare facilities, dog training facilities and dog parks. Kennel cough is an airborne disease which can be transmitted through airborne droplets as well as through direct contact with other dogs. 

The most common way for dogs to contract kennel cough are the following: 

  • Nose touching.
  • Sharing food and water bowls. 
  • Poorly ventilated areas. 

The Symptoms

It is important to note that not all symptoms will be visible in every dog. Energy levels and appetite often do NOT change as a result of kennel cough. Symptoms of kennel cough include the following…

  • Persistent and forceful coughing (dry, harsh and high pitched cough)
  • Sneezing 
  • Runny nose
  • Eye discharge

Treatment and Prevention

Kennel cough is contagious. If you think your dog might have the condition, you should keep them away from other animals and contact your veterinarian. Although most cases of kennel cough will resolve without treatment, medications may speed recovery or minimize symptoms during the course of infection. Kennel cough can be very dangerous for pets with underlying medical conditions. ongoing kennel cough infection can lead to pneumonia, be sure to follow up with your veterinarian if your dog doesn’t improve within the expected amount of time.   • Using a harness instead of collar to help minimize coughing. 
  • Keeping your pet in a well humidified area. 
  • Keeping your pet isolated and distanced from other pets. 
  • Consistently keeping surfaces clean throughout your home.

Pawadise Pet Care takes kennel cough very seriously. If a dog under our care is showing symptoms of kennel cough, we will immediately contact the owner to bring the matter to their attention. When a dog is confirmed to have kennel cough symptoms we highly recommend the owner to bring them into the vet for a checkup before returning to our care. We’ve put this measure in place in order to minimize the spread of kennel cough as it is highly contagious. We know it can be inconvenient for your dog to be turned away from our care, but we’ve implemented this procedure in order to keep all of our pets healthy and safe.
